When the sun sets in October, most people clock out of work, but for some that’s when the real fun begins. Not everyone can say their job involves chasing people with fake chainsaws or dripping in stage blood; but for haunted house workers it’s all in a night’s work.
Sophomore Kain Yochum, who works at The Hillside House Of Hell, said that working at a haunted house is fun but sometimes scary.
“Where I work is actually haunted, it was a hospital and an insane asylum, and over 50 people died there,” said Yochum. “I’ve had things thrown at me, doors slam on me, and my shirt pulled. But the people there are great and friendly.”
Yochum said he decided to work at a haunted house to scare people and make friends.
“I figured it would be fun and it very much is!” said Yochum. “I really wanted to see what it was like to be a scare actor, and I thought it would be harder but it is very easy.”
Junior Kat Kennedy, who works at the Squirrel Cage Jail, said that working at a haunted house is really helping them with their future career.
“I feel like working at a haunted house might help me feel more comfortable with my scare acting and seeing what works because I want to work at Universal studios or be in a zombie show or movie one day,” said Kennedy
Kennedy said that the thing they love about working at a haunted house is the scares and the compliments they receive.
“I absolutely love getting a good scare or getting compliments on my makeup,” said Kennedy. “It really means so much because I don’t wear a mask and I actually do my own makeup and that takes so much time to do.”
Kennedy said that while they love working at the Squirrel Cage Jail there are some parts they don’t like.
“While it’s nice meeting the people you work with, there are people who will come in and harass the haunters who usually volunteer to be there,” said Kennedy. “It’s really annoying and just not cool when you’re trying to have a good time and scare people.”
Sophomore Kaliuana Garcia says she worked at a haunted house because of family.
“I decided to work at a haunted house because my cousin was working there so I decided to,” said Garcia. “ It’s really fun! I enjoy it a lot, and it’s funny seeing how people react to getting scared.”
Garcia says the thing she enjoys about working at a haunted house is her friends.
“I enjoy making friends and having my friends come through or work with me!” said Garcia.
The Halloween season is coming to an end so if you are looking for a good thrill, quickly buy your tickets before the haunted houses are closed until the next fall season.
