For most, Halloween is a time of candy, costumes, and more. However, for some, Halloween is an opportunity to participate in a yearly family tradition. Many people have their own individual traditions, whether they stem from culture, history, family customs, or other unique circumstances that bring each other together for the spooky season.
Junior Finn Roberts enjoys spending the spooky season by partaking in both outside-the-house and homey festivities with their grandma and father.
“I spend Halloween with my grandma by looking at Halloween sections in stores and buying some if we can,” said Roberts. “I spend Halloween with my dad by baking things with him.”
Roberts uses Halloween as an opportunity to bring family together that don’t necessarily come by often in his household.
“I don’t really have anything to do with other family members because they’re usually busy, but we really just do it to spend time together during Halloween,” said Roberts. “For clarification, it’s usually me and grandma or dad and me, because my dad and grandma don’t really interact, but I still like spending time with both of them.”
Junior Alex Rice takes part in a very famous Halloween tradition, trick-or-treating. However, he does it for different reasons, opposed to the fun and free candy for himself.
“My mom has us kids get her candy in her candy bucket because she either works or has something she needs to do,” said Rice.
Not only does Rice manage to spend plenty of time with his siblings, but he is also able to make a very kind gesture to his mother, who is busy during the holiday.
“My older brother Payton, my little sister Jaiden, and I do it. It ties us together because it doesn’t just help our mom,” said Rice. “It bonds us kids together, too.”
Junior Kat Kennedy not only celebrates Halloween, but also an unexpected sibling’s birthday on the same date.
“My little sister’s birthday is on Halloween, every year we go down to Carter Lake and trick or treat, then we have the party late at night,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy finds this family bonding time very important to them, especially due to the fact that it is their sister’s birthday.
“Family has always been very important to me and my family, and it’s just tradition to have a party in Carter Lake with my popo,” said Kennedy. “Halloween is also important because it is my sister’s birthday, but we get to go trick or treating as a huge family.”.
