Have you ever read the book “Frozen Charlotte”? Have you ever heard of it? Well if you haven’t read it, it is an interesting and entertaining read that is full of suspense and surprise that makes you wonder about what actually happened to the main character’s cousin, Sophie. It makes us try to think of all the clues that Sophie finds while questioning her family and exploring.
The book follows the perspective of a girl named Sophie as she visits her family that lives on the Isle of Sky in Scotland. Her family there includes her uncle James (a famous painter), her cousins Cameron who is a musical genius with a scarred right hand, Piper who acts way too cheerful and kind towards Sophie, and Lilias a little girl who has a morbid fear of bones. In this story, Sophie discovers the hidden past to all of the tragedies that had happened at the schoolhouse where her cousins lived. Such as the death of her seven year old cousin who was discovered to have been murdered by Piper. Piper also tries to kill Sophie and Cameron. She gave her little sister, Lilias, such a fear of bones that she convinced her to try and cut her own skeleton out, but Cameron and Sophie managed to save Lilias, and they barely survive the house being burnt down and Cameron having a big gash down his side. And in the end Piper ends up dying in the fire that she had constructed herself to destroy her family.
One of the reasons that this book is so interesting is because of the main antagonists of the story, the dolls. The kind of dolls that are specifically mentioned in this book are called frozen charlotte dolls, and they actually exist in real life. These dolls can be anywhere from a few inches to 18 inches tall. These dolls in the book are based off of a poem that is called “Frozen Charlotte”. It is about a woman who doesn’t listen to her mother about wearing a cloak on a cold night on her way to a dance and just goes in her dress. On the way to the dance the woman ends up dying in the cold. Her name is Charlotte which is why the poem is named “Frozen Charlotte”. The whole point of the dolls was to teach little girls how to sew so that they can make clothes for the dolls.
In the story, the dolls whisper in the ears of any little girl who lives inside of the schoolhouse in which Cameron, Piper, and Lilias live in-and they tell them to do horrible things such as one example being the dolls told Piper to stab needles into her boyfriends eyes. These dolls also made the girls who used to live in the schoolhouse kill each other and eventually kill their teacher, which is how Sophie’s cousins and uncle eventually got the house in the first place.
Another reason why the story, “Frozen Charlotte” by Alex Bell, is so interesting is because of the ghost Rebecca. Rebecca in the book is first thought to be evil because she follows Sophia around and haunts her, but it is revealed at the end of the book that Rebecca is actually a kind spirit who only wanted Sophie see the truth about Piper. Rebecca does this by reenacting exactly what Piper did to her, how Piper shoved her down the side of a cliff, how she threw stones at her, and how Piper kept talking about how much she wanted Rebecca dead and how excited she was to be at her funeral. In the end, Rebecca is a necessary and fascinating part of the story and helps teach the readers not to always judge a book by its cover.
One last reason why the book “Frozen Charlotte” is so interesting is because of Cameron. Cameron is the oldest of Sophie’s cousins and is even older than her. He is a musical genius, but he adds suspense and mystery to the story by never fully answering Sophie’s questions about how Rebecca died and how his right hand got injured, and always leaves Sophie with more questions than what she started with. Cameron also makes sure that Sophie thinks that he’s a bad guy and that he doesn’t care about anything, but he makes sure to surprise the readers and Sophie alike by always making sure to help people when it matters. This is how Cameron is one of the things that makes the book “Frozen Charlotte” that makes the story more interesting.
In the end, the story “Frozen Charlotte” by Alex Bell is quite interesting. The book includes characters and antagonists that drive the plot forward and make it an interesting read with suspense and surprise when things we don’t expect to happen happen. The reasons that make the story more interesting are the dolls, Rebecca, and Cameron. Without these reasons the book wouldn’t have been the same as it is, which is why and how these reasons make the story “Frozen Charlotte” more intriguing and entertaining.
