High school athletes have a lot on their plates, juggling school, sports and social life. This usually leads to stress and anxiety, which is why mental health is super important. The pressure to perform well in games and keep up with schoolwork can be overwhelming.
There are a few things that can help student athletes struggling with mental health. Talking to someone can make a huge difference—whether it’s a friend, coach, or counselor. Just having someone to share your feelings with can lighten the load. Another big help is finding ways to manage stress, like practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques.
Senior Aubree McCumber says having a strong and encouraging foundation of people helps balance school, sports, and work.
“Having people around you who support and encourage you is very important, so you don’t have to carry all the weight,” McCumber said. “This usually helps me keep my mental health in check.”
Prioritizing well-being, setting boundaries, and seeking support when needed is huge for student athletes.
Another senior at Abraham Lincoln, Kati Podraza, says setting limits on intensive training helps her rest and recover and helps her mental health.
“When it comes to my mental health, I make sure not to wear myself out; time management is important,” Podraza said. “I make time for rest and recovery after an intense workout, ensuring I don’t overdo it.”
Practicing and implementing exercises that help with anxiety and feeling overwhelmed are important; every student athlete should understand and know how to when needed.
Freshman Kathryn Sanchez says dealing with her anxiety and the feeling of being overwhelmed is practicing breathing patterns, and focusing on physical sensations to ground yourself.
“When it comes to being overwhelmed and anxious, I always have a simple but effective breathing exercise that helps me,” Sanchez said. “I imagine a square in my head and for each side breathe in for 5 seconds, next side of the square hold, next side breathe out, and repeat.”
Reaching out for help as a student athlete is an important essential to not feeling overwhelmed, struggling with mental health and burnout.
