Riddles to solve, clues to find, and secrets to dig up. “The Inheritance Games” starts with Avery’s backstory. Her mother died when Avery was 15 leaving her with her older sister, Libby. Libby can only be described as “a sunshine goth,” with blue hair and a heart full of love for her younger sister. She gets called to the principal’s office for the will reading of Tobias Hawthorne. With no idea why, Avery attends anyway, believing she might get a few thousand dollars or something from the philanthropist. While the reading goes on the others receive very little. Tobias’s daughters only receive trinkets and money to pay off debts. The grandsons only get a hundred thousand dollars each. While Avery Kylie Grambs, who believes she has never met the man and doesn’t think she should even be here, gets everything. The $46.2 billion, the Hawthorne House, the Hawthorne Foundation, everything.
Nash doesn’t care, Grayson thinks she is a con artist, Jameson believes she is the old man’s last game for him to play, and Xander is eating scones with the new billionaire. Avery thinks this is all a mistake, that he must have gotten it wrong. Now she must live in the Hawthorne House for a whole year before getting everything. Avery has her hands full with threats on her life and secrets to uncover from the old man.
Books like the Inheritance Games are fun to read because as events start to piece together the reader also gets to theorize and guess what happens next or why it happened. Throughout the book, you also get to take part in the game. Whenever the next clue was found you could try to piece it together along with Avery. My sister and mother both read the series after I was done and they also asked questions about the book and the reasons behind Mr. Hawkthorne’s actions. It makes for a great discussion between people who read it—theorizing the how’s and why’s of the genius known as Tobias Hawthorne.
While reading the book I fell in love with the protagonist, Avery. She was clever and didn’t let others push her around. She used her brain to prove others wrong. Whenever she was faced with a challenge from the old man or a riddle from Jameson she solved it quickly. The Hawthorne brothers are funny and memorable. Whenever the brothers were together it always made me laugh and smile. I couldn’t put it down for long without wondering what new secret or riddle would be solved next. The Inheritance Games is full of mystery and secrets. Each book has a new secret to uncover and another game to play by the genius Tobias Hawthorne. This amazing trilogy deserves a read if you love a good mystery.
