Do you know the musical at AL this year? They’re creepy and they’re cooky, their house is a museum, they’re all together ooky. That’s right, AL’s arts program is doing “Addams Family: the Musical.” Tonight and Saturday night AL’s talented and outgoing arts students are going to sing, dance, and re-create a family classic. Addams Family is a very popular film franchise that has had many movies and more, including; live actions, animated, musical, and even the original story line of comic books. In this creative adaptation the Addams family goes through many challenges when faced with an issue they’ve never worked through. These include keeping secrets from each other, material challenges, trust issues, lying and more.
Senior Emy Bagshaw, who plays the grandma, says her favorite part this year is building new relationships with other members. She also enjoys being able to try new things on set.
“I loved working with the techies this year,” Bagshaw said. “I’ve not been able to help with the set before and getting to do minor things like touch ups has been so much fun.”
Senior Kam White, who plays Lucas, says he’s had a lot of fun this year with this musical, and that it’s a very funny musical to get to do.
“I’d say my favorite part of the musical has been the songs,” White said. “The songs this year have been fun for me,” said White. “My favorite line would probably be ‘thanks, I’m named after my uncle Lucas who got lost in the woods and ate his own leg.’”
This year at AL there is also a new director for the musical, Nick Anderson. It is his 11th year teaching and his 5th musical, however this is his first time teaching it as a class. Anderson says he has enjoyed his first year as the director and has enjoyed getting to know everyone at AL.
“I have had a great 1st year at AL getting to know the students, teachers, administrators, and parents. I look forward to what the future brings,” said Anderson.
Students said they have benefited from having Anderson as a director this year and they’ve really enjoyed how he has led practices and persevered with schedule issues. Sophomore Emily Wilson says he is very good at communicating and reassuring students when they have questions.
“I have really enjoyed Andersen as our director because I always have so many questions and he always tries his very best to answer them,” said Wilson.
Freshman Camila Caraballo Rangel agrees with Wilson and says he is always willing to help and knows how to put it in a way where it doesn’t hurt your feelings.“Yes yes yes, he’s really kind and understanding, he’s not harsh but he will make sure you know how to fix something without making you feel bad,” said Caraballo Rangel.
