From the first patent for a motorcar, created by Carl Benz in 1885, to the big boom of Henry Ford, cars have evolved tremendously over time.
Cars have always been powered by gas, but, in more recent years, people have come up with ways to make cars better, such as the electric car.
At least two teachers at AL have electric vehicles (EV), including Principle Rob Lidquist, who drives an electric 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5-said, “After I started doing the research on the electric truck, I knew that I wanted to stick with an electric vehicle. And so whether that was a hybrid or full electric, and after doing a whole bunch of research, I want an electric vehicle.”
EV’s have a lasting impact on the environment. Firstly, you don’t have to go to a gas station to get gas, which can reduce global warming and pollution. Secondly, electric cars can have a longer lifespan than I.C.E (Internal Combustion Engine) cars. Lastly, the long term effect that electric cars have on the environment can be better than gas cars.
Engineering teacher Ryan Higgins’ opinion on electric cars is: “I am all for them,” he says. “I think the plug-in-hybrid is the best option right now.”
A plug-in-hybrid is an electric and gas car combined. It can last to a certain percent on a charge before it kicks in to gas.
However, Mr. Higgins also said, “For day to day travel, I prefer electric cars.”
In the long run both cars can have an impact on the environment. Gas cars can cause pollution and global warming; but the mining and making of batteries for electric cars also has an impact. Currently the technology for EV’s is just starting up, they have a long way to go.
Like Mr. Lindquist said, “The infrastructure is there for gas vehicles. I think once we get that in place for electric vehicles, I think more people will like it. In general, gas vehicles have an advantage right now, but we’ll get there.”
EV’s have a long way to go, they are just in the “testing” stage right now. But electric vehicles could be the future for us.
Fun Fact: Both Principle Lindquist and Mr. Higgins were asked: “What is your dream car?” Lindquist responded: “An electric vehicle that can go 500 miles on a charge that’s a three row SUV.” Higgins responded: “Shelby Cobra.”
