Students at AL constantly talk about wanting to have the privilege to go off campus for lunch. While some schools are lucky and allow students to leave campus or order food, students at AL don’t have this luxury. Students should be allowed to leave campus for lunch with certain regulations. With certain rules and standards, set off-campus lunch/ordering could become a great addition to AL.
With the right requirements and rules, off-campus lunch could be a great opportunity for students at AL. Some of these requirements/restrictions would include maintaining C’s, 90% attendance, having your own vehicle, grade checks, and more.
Here are some requirements that could be set for students if implemented: students must maintain C’s or better. To keep track of this, students will complete “temperature checks” (monitored grading) every Monday. Admin can also run PowerSchool reports to ensure students don’t lie on temperature checks (which they should already be doing in advisement). Another requirement will be maintaining 90% attendance, which is already being strictly monitored due to the new Iowa law. One last example of a requirement is that students have to provide their own vehicle and can’t walk or bike there. This will make it easier for the school to make sure they aren’t worrying about transportation for students.
Off-campus lunch will only be offered to students who meet these requirements. To go more in-depth about how this will work, here are some examples: students can only leave on Tuesdays and Fridays due to short Mondays and temperature checks; Wednesdays and Thursdays are for habitudes. Students will not be allowed to leave on days we have state testing or any mandatory testing that interferes with the school day. Another rule to ensure students are on time could be setting a perimeter for how far they can go for lunch. Off-campus lunch will also not be allowed on days that are right before break or when there is early dismissal/late start due to weather.
To continue more in-depth on how this will work parents/guardians at the beginning of the year must sign a release form stating that the school isn’t responsible for providing transportation or money. Students will also be required to show proof of a valid license to ensure the school won’t get in trouble with any legal issues.
If students no longer meet the requirements for off-campus lunch, they will be removed for that student until they meet the requirements again, or until the next month. If students return to their following period tardy or tardy extreme more than 3 times, the privilege will be taken away until the following quarter or until seen fit. This will help ensure that students are returning on time and following the rules for off-campus lunch.
Off-campus lunch could be a great reward for students at AL. With certain requirements and rules set it could help with maintaining grades, attendance, and even minimize the amount of students leaving during lunch currently to go off campus.
