Summer is here which means that AL’s softball team is about to start. The girls are getting prepared and the team will have the first game on May 19.
Sophomore outfielder Zoey Mendoza said she is looking forward to improving.
“I am really looking forward to being able to better myself in my position and meet the new people on the team,” said Mendoza.
Mendoza believes the team will do great this season due to energy.
“So long as the team puts just as much, if not more energy and positivity from last season, I think we’ll definitely do great during this season,” said Mendoza.
Sophomore 3rd baseman Brooklyn James said she is looking forward to practice.
“Something I’m excited for this upcoming season is to start practicing with my teammates again and playing with new people,” said James.
James said she believes the season will be great due to the freshmen.
“This season is going to be great due to the large group of freshmen that are coming on to the team and there are some pretty good players,” said James.
Freshman 1st baseman Quinn Reese said she is most looking forward to spending time with the others.
“I’m most looking forward to improving and spending time with my teammates,” said Reese.
Reese said the team will do great if they focus.
“Similar to last year, the team will be very young. I think if we focus on the right things in practice and play as a team, we can do pretty well,” said Reese.
Head coach Kristen McCoid said she hopes to accomplish putting all of their efforts into this season.
“Some things we will talk about are improving every day and putting in 110% effort and having a positive attitude. We have to control what we can control. As a team some things I hope we can accomplish are bettering our skills every day, having good sportsmanship and improving our record from last season,” said McCoid. “As a team it would be nice to see us accomplish a batting average of .275 or higher, we have been putting in a lot of off season work and have established a good routine to get our bats going and develop better muscle memory.”
McCoid said one of the goals that the team has to do deals with the conference and cities.
“As for a team goal I would like for us to be in the top 3 of our conference and compete well in all of our city match ups this season. I want us to be competitive! We ended our season well last year by taking down Sioux City North in districts so I’m hoping we feed off of that and see that we can achieve great things if we work hard and work together,” said McCoid. “As a team we also expect to have great sportsmanship and build a strong chain within ourselves and have a great culture. We don’t want any ‘kinks’ in our chain. The more we can be great teammates and lift each other up the more successful we will be! Our coaching staff is excited for this upcoming season to develop these young athletes and show them what they can achieve together.”
The softball season will last until Tuesday July 7 and possibly longer due to quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.
