Guardians of the Journalism Staff: Volume 1
Here’s a chat to help you to get to know a few of our staffers.
Shaelynn Barba (Senior, Yearbook Co-Editor-Chief)
What makes you, you?
I just try to be fully myself at all times, I try to be kind to everyone and hopefully make people smile sometimes.
How is the yearbook coming along? What’s been your favorite part of the Yearbook so far?
I think the yearbook is coming along really well considering this year’s circumstances. I think my favorite part of the yearbook is the colors, last year we didn’t have as many colors so this year we wanted to do more so we chose bright colors.
What do you do to help others?
I just try to help people when they ask for advice or help designing something.
Are there any future projects that you would like to do?
I’m not sure about the future yet, I just want to try and expand my knowledge for designing pages and hopefully do some really cool spreads.
What do you like to do other than yearbook?
Outside of school I really enjoy painting and skating, I may not be good at either but it makes me happy.
Corynne Henson (Junior, Yearbook Reporter/Photographer)
What makes you, you?
There are so many things that make me who I am today. I like to think I am very hard working. Majority of my free time I spend working after school. I also began playing soccer when I was 8 years old and have been playing since.
How is the yearbook coming along? What’s been your favorite part of the Yearbook so far?
This has been such a rough year for our yearbook staff under the circumstances of covid. It makes it very hard with students online and it makes it very different from any other year, but, luckily with our amazing yearbook staff we are able to get our yearbook on track and get things done. I can definitely say this yearbook will be different from any other. So far, I don’t have a favorite part about the yearbook.
What do you do to help others?
I try to review stories and pages of others just for any mistakes or for anything that can improve it.
Are there any future projects that you would like to do?
I actually don’t have anything in mind yet.
What do you like to do other than yearbook?
Well other than the yearbook, I work nearly everyday after school. When I’m not working or at school, I enjoy playing with my bunny or I practice for soccer season in hopes to improve. I am usually always busy juggling school, work, family, and friends, which is really difficult.
Madeline Knau (Senior, Broadcasting Executive Producer)
What makes you, you?
I’m a dedicated broadcasting student and really love giving other students their voices or being their voice or topics that they either want to hear or they wish they would do the story about. My personality is special and I notice that people know me by the “Camera Girl” because I’m always with a camera. I’m motivated, people view me as motivated. A lot of people know me from Broadcasting or they’ll walk up to me and say, “Hey Camera Girl” or “It’s Camera Girl.” I love knowing that people know my intentions and knowing what I’m motivated for.
What projects have been your favorite to work with so far? Why?
Every single political story that I’ve done has been my favorite. I am a big fan of politics, I don’t like talking about politics that much because of personal opinions but I like being able to interview different political candidates and being at their rallies, it’s so cool and it’s such a fun experience. Then there’s “Guess The Childhood Theme Song,” which was one of my favorites because it brought back part of my childhood for the ones that I knew. It’s so great to actually see that some people enjoy watching LPTV because we have a lot of students that I notice that just want to sit on their phones and not watch LPTV or teachers that don’t want to show it, but I love it when I get to a class and I see someone sitting on their phone or computer watching LPTV because it’s so cool.
What do you do to help others?
I ask anyone if they need help, if they need help I’ll help them with story ideas, editing, putting in my personal opinion, and recommending fixing something up.
Are there any future projects that viewers would like to see?
I would like to do “Candy From Around the World” and “The Top 10 Best Kids Bop Albums!”
What do you like to do other than broadcasting?
I love show choir, I like dancing, singing. It’s a mixture of both, I love speech, that’s another hobby I do in Abraham Lincoln High School. Out of school, when I’m not at work, I like hanging out with my friends. I go raccoon hunting every other friday with a friend of mine, but I love hanging out with friends because it gets me time to spend with them because when I go to college I’m not going to be able to spend time with them, especially my friends that are juniors now because I’ll be going away for college and I’m not planning to be an in-state student.
Aubrey Whitworth (Sophomore,Broadcasting Reporter)
What makes you, you?
I’m not really sure what makes me, me. from a journalism standpoint I would say I have a pretty creative mind which makes it easier to come up with ideas and I work well with others which makes it easy to accomplish stuff.
What projects have been your favorite to work with so far? Why?
My favorite project this year has probably been the world’s food story I did with Sidnie Clark, Maggie Grover and Madeline Knau because I got to eat lots of good candy and it was my first story.
What do you do to help others?
I try to help people with their stories in my free time like help volunteering to record a story for them or being a part of fun packages such as “Guess the Halloween Movie.”
Are there any future projects that viewers would like to see?
Hannah and I are currently working on a new story that should be recorded and posted within the month on fun quarantine activities such as crafts and cooking.
What do you like to do other than broadcasting?
I like being a wrestling manager now that the season has started and hanging out with my animals.
Sam Hovey (Junior, Newspaper Reporter)
What makes you, you?
I’d say I have a pretty unique style. Ever since I was a kid, I would always take a different path from everyone else. I liked to be a trendsetter. When I start wearing something different or doing something differently, it would always make my day when someone else followed in my footsteps.
What has been your favorite story to write about? Why?
I’ve completed two stories so far in my time in newspaper, and my favorite is easily my Gen Z story. I reached out to an activist who has a petition with over 11 million signatures, not expecting a response. To my surprise, not 5 minutes later, she responded. It was my first ever interview since intro to journalism and it’s definitely one to remember. It was so interesting to hear an expert’s opinion on Gen Z’s future potential.
What do you do to help others?
I love to give advice. Whether it’s about relationships, fashion, or just life in general, giving good advice is one of my best traits.
Are there any stories that you would like to work on in the future?
I’m currently working on a story on how to cope with seasonal depression. With the weather getting colder, and the sun showing less often, it’s easy to get into a slump. That’s why I want to write this story; to help people. I know how hard it can be to get out of bed in the morning with cold, gloomy weather outside, but there are ways to shake that lack of motivation off.
What do you like to do other than newspaper?
I’ve recently gotten into fashion, so online shopping and fashion styling have been a big part of my life currently. I also enjoy driving. Whenever I’m stressed out I like to go on a drive to calm myself down.
Jordan Schnackenberg (Senior, Newspaper Co-Opinion Editor)
What makes you, you?
That is really hard to say. I think there are many things that factor out what makes me me. I would say I’m always willing to help anyone out who needs it. Putting others before myself.
What has been your favorite story to write about? Why?
I think some of the best and most fun stories I have gotten to write are the Pets of the Month ones . I also really enjoy going to events and writing anything on A&E,and the News page.
What do you do to help others?
In newspaper, I always check people’s stories and help them if they need anything. Outside of school, I help my sister with her journalism. At my work I have to help people find what they need.
Are there any stories that you would like to work on in the future?
I don’t think so, I’m hoping that we get to do a print issue so I can finally design a page and have that moment for a little bit. I like doing any story so whatever is out there is good with me.
What do you like to do other than newspaper?
I found my love for retail. I have been working at Old Navy for about 5 months. Going into work almost everyday doesnt even feel like a job. I am also the lead in the boys and girls department. That just means I get to change the mannequins and visuals every month which I really enjoy. Finding something you love can really help you relieve your stress.
