Valentine’s Day is often celebrated with couples giving each other gifts such as flowers, candy and chocolate, jewelry, and stuffed animals. What about the price? And how do these costs affect students?
Randi Wurtz, a sophomore at TJ, and junior at AL, Cas Sakalosky have been dating for 7 months, and are celebrating their first Valentine’s Day this year.
“I am getting him a fishing bouquet, I estimate it to be around $30 to $50,” said Wurtz. “We are also going out to dinner, and I estimate that to be around $50.”
“I’m going to get her flowers and chocolates, which will probably be around $30,” said Sakalosky. “Yes, we are going out to dinner, and the estimated cost is around $50 to $70.”
Seniors Ayden Estell and Tucker Haitz have been together for almost 2 years, and are celebrating their second Valentine’s Day this year.
“I got him his favorite snacks, Nerds gummy clusters, cheese and caramel popcorn, and some chocolates. I also got him two cans of his favorite monsters. I plan on getting him chocolate-covered strawberries and a bouquet of roses, because I believe everyone deserves flowers,” said Estell. “If I add up the total of everything I would be getting him, it would be $73.60.”
“I am making Ayden a basket with flowers and some of her favorite snacks, and I am estimating it will cost roughly $50,” said Haitz. “I plan to take her to dinner at Texas de Brazil, which will cost roughly $110.”
Seniors Greysen Clark and Kylie Kohl have been together for 2 years, and are celebrating their third Valentine’s Day together.
“Our gifts kinda look different depending on the year. Sometimes it’s just a date, and other times it’s full of gifts. This year it will be a little bit of both with small gifts like drinks, food, ETC. This year, we are trying to save money for our future so we won’t be spending as much. Somewhere between $20 to $70 dollars plus our dinner and a date,” said Clark.
“This year, we just decided to do something together instead of getting gifts. So we will probably split the cost of that,” said Kohl. “I will also probably make him chocolate strawberries because they are his favorite, and I think it will be around $10.”
The cost of love this Valentine’s Day can add up for students in love, and maybe people who just want to celebrate themselves this V-Day. Perhaps they can celebrate with handpicked flowers, handmade cards, and homemade treats.
