Lent is a 40-day Christian season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (charity), that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends before Easter. Whether you participate in Lent for religious purposes, you can also just use this as a time to give something up for 40 days.
Junior Riley Lindgren is giving up her favorite places for Lent, and knows it will be a struggle.
“I am giving up Scooter’s, Starbucks, and McDonald’s,” said Lindgren. “ I know it will be a struggle, but I have been Catholic since I was born, and it’s a Catholic practice.”
Junior Ellie Bradley said she is giving up energy drinks for Lent.
“I’m giving energy drinks up for lent because I drink them too much, and they’re bad for you,” said Bradley.
Junior Lilian Miller also gave up energy drinks for Lent.
“Because it was bad for my body and becoming an addiction,” said Miller. “I wanted to do something harder this year to prove my commitment to myself.”
Economics teacher Myron Wilder said he is giving up junk food and fast food.
“I have a bad habit of buying junk food at gas stations and fast food places so I’m abstaining from that during Lent,” said Wilder. “It will be challenging and keep me focused on what lent is about and what Jesus gave up for us.”
