Abraham Lincoln Girls Wrestling is no longer combined with Thomas Jefferson and is now its own team. Lynx head coach Mat Daniels says there will not be as much of a difference from last year other than focusing more on Abraham Lincoln.
“Pros: We are competing schools so it will be nice to focus on A.L. solely,” Daniels said. “We will be able to build one program. I do not see any cons of splitting squads.”
Senior Myah Wright has many goals for the season.
“My goals this season are to make my skills better and try to make it to state,” she said.
Junior Hailee Showers says one of the cons of splitting wrestling teams was losing friendships built when both schools were conjoined.
“The only con I can think of from splitting from TJ was the wrestling relationships we had made with the TJ girls,” Showers said. “As our coaches didn’t believe in us last year, we girls believed in each other and that’s what pushed us through the rest of that season.”
Showers said having two different coaches led to inconsistencies at practices last year.
“We’d do something different every day, so we would never make any improvement on anything,” she said.
Sophomore Evelynn Susano is also excited about not being tied with TJ.
“I am so glad we are not with TJ this year. I feel like we have so much time to grow as a LYNX girls wrestler,” she said.
Abraham Lincoln is hosting a conference meet on Dec. 5 and fans are encouraged to come and cheer on the Lynx wrestlers.
