Most people associate track with running. However, some athletes prefer the other events. Freshman Elizabeth Puoch is looking forward to throwing the discus this season.
“I look forward to traveling to meets during the school day,” Puoch said. She enjoys going to different places to take part in the fun things, whether it’s competing in the discus or fun traditions that people take part in.
“There is a tradition with clothespins where they write good things on them and pin them on people. I like it because I can meet new people and make new friends.” Puoch said. She is often described as a social person who enjoys meeting new people.
Her younger sister, Nyayan Puoch, agrees.
“I enjoy doing track with Elizabeth. I think she likes to do track because she likes to socialize with others,” Nyayan Puoch said.
Nyayan was the one to convince her and their mom to have Elizabeth go out for track.
“My mom made me do it,” Puoch said. She was not interested in track when first starting, but after finding what she liked, discus, she started to enjoy it.
“I don’t like to run,” Puoch said. She doesn’t prefer to run, which is what many people think track is. However, many other events do not incorporate running. Puoch resorted to those events so she does not have to do what she dislikes.
“I like to do discus,” Puoch said. She has found something she enjoys in track and is set on continuing to do it and make goals to get better at it.
“In discus, I would like to go about 80 to 85 feet,” Puoch said. She believes it is a good goal for her to set that is not too challenging but also not too easy for her.
“I’ve gotten a score of 75 feet,” Puoch said. She has said her best score she has ever gotten was 75 feet, which makes her goal of 80 to 85 feet seem reasonable to achieve. It is impressive for her for the amount of time she’s been doing the discus event.
“I’ve been doing it for a year,” Puoch said. Even though she has been doing it for a short amount of time, she still believes she is a good thrower. “A lot is happening in track, and there are always people everywhere.”
