This year’s Lynx girls wrestling team is ready to take the mats by storm. They return three state wrestlers, sophomores Ellie Johnson and Amaiah Brooks, along with junior Lilian Miller. The team is led by these three along with seniors Hailee Showers and Evelynn Susano.
“The plan is to work hard, make adjustments and watch matches of our opponents to have a plan to beat them,” head coach Mat Daniels said.
Although they were only freshmen, Amaiah Brooks and Ellie Johnson both qualified for state. These girls spent last year attacking practice with precision, and plan on reaching state again
“We usually start with a warm-up to get our bodies moving, then we stretch all parts of our bodies to prevent injuries,” Brooks said. “After that, we begin working on technique, then we move into conditioning, like sprints or live situations.”
The team not only looks to wrestle well against each other and in the conference, but thinks they stack up well against other teams in the state.
“I think we are a very solid team because we have such an experienced coach,” junior Lillian Miller said. “I feel like we will wrestle well and compete with teams around the state.”
The lady wrestlers start their season on Nov. 22 at the Central Iowa Kickoff Tournament in Nevada, Iowa and host their first home meet on Nov. 25.
“In our sport, we bring passion and energy into it,” Brooks said. “Every match is competitive, and when you watch our matches, you can see our mental toughness and the effort that goes into a wrestling match.”
