The candidates for the 2024 Presidential Election include Republican Donald J. Trump and his running mate James David (JD) Vance. Democrat Kamala D. Harris and her running mate Timothy (Tim) J. Walz.
Trump announced his campaign for the 2024 election on November 15, 2022, and was officially nominated on July 15, 2024; in July of 2024, Trump selected Vance as his running mate. Harris formally announced her run for president on January 27, 2019, and was officially nominated on August 5, 2024; Harris selected Walz as her running mate in August of 2024.
Kamala and Trump both have different views on education. Democrat Kamala believes in gender identity in schools, early childhood education, and college affordability. Republican Trump believes in closing the Department of Education, on school choice, and book bans.
In April, the Biden-Harris administration expanded protections against sex discrimination in schools to include gender identity. Harris proposed expanding the Child Tax Credit, she even pitched a larger boost of up to $6,000 for newborns. The Biden-Harris administration went all-in on federal student loan forgiveness.
Trump told Elon Musk in an interview that, if elected, he wants to close the Department of Education. Trump is calling for a universal school choice, meaning this would take public dollars normally spent on a child’s public education and give them directly to parents to spend at whatever school they desire (whether it be public, private, or homeschool). In July, Trump pledged to cut federal funding for any school or program pushing inappropriate content.
U.S. Government Teacher Bryan Pregon was asked: How do you, as a teacher, feel about both Kamala’s and Trump’s views on education?
To which he replied: “I would say that in general, I am more on the side of the government should spend more money to invest more into education programs. So that puts me more on the liberal side, or the democrat side.”
A google form was sent out to ALHS seniors containing multiple questions about the election, and data was collected from thirty five students. 71.4% of seniors said they are not voting in the 2024 Presidential Election, 22.9% said yes, and 5.7% said maybe. The question: If you are eligible, who are you voting for in this year’s Presidential Election? 68.6% of seniors said they are not voting, 20% said Donald Trump (JD Vance), and 2.9% said Kamala Harris (Tim Walz).
The 2024 Presidential Election will be a close call, a “statistical coin flip” as stated by Mr. Pregon. Both Harris and Trump are very close in the election, but on November 5, 2024 the new president of the United States will be elected.
