The MidAmerican Energy Adventure Tower is coming soon to Council Bluffs River Edge Park. The $50 million project is set to be completed by 2025. The tower will be 138 feet tall and feature various viewing platforms and a multitude of activities for visitors to enjoy.
“The benefit to the community is an expanded recreational opportunity and visual and physical access to the river,” said Vincent Martorello, director of Council Bluffs Community Parks and Rec.
There will be many activities to indulge in, including a 50-foot climbing wall designed to accommodate pre-Olympic speed climbing. There is also over of synthetic cave environment to climb through for climbers of any level as well as a large roller-ride with two 480’ tracks, similar to a large metal zip-line, with specialized harnesses. A pier and tree-top walk are also planned to be added as part of River’s Edge Phase Four. The tree-top walk will be connected to the Bob Kerrey Bridge and serve as access to the tower.
Due to the tower’s location by the river, proper precautions have been taken to prevent flooding. Electrical and mechanical systems will be installed 5’18 off the ground in preparation for rising water levels. The tower is specifically designed for flood conditions and fluctuating river levels and is resistant to harsh weather.
Seating and restrooms will also be included as part of public accommodations. As far as accessibility, elevators will be added and are above flood levels. It is undetermined what the cost of amenities will be, but entrance and access to the observation platforms and tree-top walk are free.
“There is no entrance fee however there is a fee to use the recreational amenities with the exception of what we are calling community days,” says Martorello. “On community days, the AM amenities will be free. These days have not been specifically decided upon when they will occur.”
Donations and fundraising are funding the hefty cost of the Adventure Tower. All funds have been secured through private donations and state grants. Mid-American Energy has contributed $5 million to the project. The Iowa West Foundation has donated $ 15 million with the rest being raised by the city of Council Bluffs in collaboration with Southwest Iowa Nonprofit for Collective Impact (SINC).
The MidAmerican Energy Adventure Tower will provide an affordable activity to the list of must-visits in Council Bluffs. The completion of the tower enhances the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and adds attraction to the Council Bluffs side of the river.
