Advancements in artificial intelligence have made great strides, and as these technologies develop, students find new ways to integrate AI into their schoolwork. Although artificial intelligence can help students learn, many students use AI to cheat on assignments.
“It’s very obvious that students are just going and getting information and plopping it in their work,” said English teacher Brooke Doner. “If they’re using the technology to personalize their learning, we shouldn’t see it.”
AI is changing the education field, raising concerns about its effect on students’ learning, engagement, and integrity in assignments. While AI systems like ChatGPT, Grammarly, and many other programs assist students with studying and giving revision assistance without the need for a teacher, students are also using AI to cheat on assignments.
According to Education Week, out of 200 million writing assignments submitted into Turnitin’s AI checker, 1 out of 10 assignments are flagged as AI-generated. Although there isn’t a direct correlation stating that the assignments were completely generated by AI, they are still showing that AI is playing a large role in generating parts of the assignments.
AI “allows you to take pictures of your questions, and it will write out answers for you to go off of,” said sophomore Patrick Cook. “It makes things a lot easier and breaks down information into simple things to help answer questions.”
The University of Iowa, states that intelligent systems are being used to help with tutoring and gives immediate feedback to students. These programs offer “…tailored learning paths based on student responses. These systems demonstrated the potential benefits of personalized learning, making technology adoption in education increasingly attractive.”
Students will always have access to AI technology and as it advances, who is to know the future of education? We will continue to see the future employment of teachers change and the education field adopt AI into instructing students.
