Baseball is always evolving, but the one thing that has evolved the most over time is pitching. Pitchers have been throwing faster and faster and not just speed has changed but they have been developing better pitches that are way harder to hit. We have sliders that have movement of over a foot. We have curveballs that are making batters look silly swinging in the dirt playing golf instead of baseball. Obviously with this amazing climb of pitchers, amazing hits have been on the decline we see more strikeouts than we do homeruns or doubles.
Torpedo bats have been introduced to game use in the MLB with the 2025 season starting up. They have had a booming upbringing, the New York Yankees have had a homerun fest with these bats being the first team to use them. Elly De La Cruz has been hitting absolute bombs with this bat and he’s known for being fast not a homerun machine.
Clearly this bat has a huge impact on how players are hitting the ball but how. Torpedo bats are shaped a little differently, instead of the barrel being at the very end of the bat it’s almost in the middle where the logo is. This distributes the weight differently but also changes where on the bat you have to hit the ball to barrel it up.
They have clearly given the hitters an advantage they have been looking for. Some baseball fans are not for these bats because they are “cheat codes.” But if pitchers are that good shouldn’t they still be able to strike out batters. The bat doesn’t tell them when to swing or where to swing, it’s not really any different from a regular bat. They have brought back an entertaining part of the game that has been fading for a while. These big hits will bring fans back into the sport we love and make pitchers have to work harder and make at bats more competitive.
Torpedo bats have given the players an advantage they have been needing for a while and for now they are here to stay, they will continue to catch the eyes of watchers and bring in old and new fans to watch the lovely sport of baseball.
