Battle of the Bluffs has been a Council Bluffs School District tradition for 71 years now. The tradition is an annual event between the two rival high schools, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson. Students and parents gather and fill the stands to watch the football teams compete to see who will win the Alumni & Friends Trophy. This specific game is a big deal between the schools and typically rotates year by year of whose homecoming game it is, however; it wasn’t always equally rotated. It used to be that whoever won the game the previous year would have it home the following year. As the tradition grew it changed to rotate year by year to make it more fair to both schools. The tradition originated around 1923. The “battle” was created after Abraham Lincoln was built and the competition for bragging rights began. It quickly became a significant event to see which school would have town bragging rights and have the trophy at their school for the year. As the tradition grew over the years, so did the crowds. Over the years the game has naturally favored Abraham Lincoln; this is proven again as Abraham Lincoln won this year 14-8. Winning the game gives bragging rights for the year, the winning school’s name engraved on the trophy, and the winning school keeps the trophy for the year.
