The theatre department is preparing for the first play of the 2025-2026 school year. Steven Dietz, the author of the book, also wrote this year’s play, “A Still Life with Iris.”
A 10-year-old girl, Iris, who lives with her mother, in a town called Nocturno, begins her journey when she loses her memories. She clings to the one thing from her past, her coat button, which directs her back home, meeting friendly faces offering a helping hand on her way.
“I like the message of finding identity and knowing who your true friends are. I’m excited to put the play out there, and to work hard with the cast! It’s always nice getting my ideas onto the stage,” said director Steve Mandelko.
The theatre department will bring this play to our auditorium this fall on November 14th and 15th at 7 pm.
The audience will join Iris (played by senior Emma Stephens), a young girl who loses her memory and must find her way home in her fantasy world.
“I’ve been acting in school plays for a long time,” said Chloe Stephens. “I’m excited to have a bigger role in the play as Miss Overlook. It’s great stepping back into something I love.”
Mr. Matternot and Mrs. Overlook (played by senior Dylan Ohara and junior Chloe Stephens), Iris’s parents, who have no memory in Iris’s world.
“When I saw I got the role of Mr. Matternot, the father, I was very excited… I auditioned this year because I had experience with previous school plays and have always had a fun time,” said Dylan Ohara.
Annabel Lee and Mozart (played by junior Clara Garton and junior Kaitlyn Zimmerman), who help Iris embark on her journey. Gretta and Grotto Good (played by senior Serenity Walker and senior Eben Flenker) who are the rulers of Iris’s imaginary island. Mister Otherguy and Mister Himtoo (played by junior Josue Zamarron and sophomore Aden Carlson), who serve and obey the Goods, as well as Elmer and Hazel (played by senior Rowan Schmidt and freshman Alyssa Johnson), who are also under the control of the Goods.
“I enjoy working with a new cast and getting people involved and excited. The kids I work with get stronger in their confidence, and it gives students the opportunity to explore their interests in theater,” said Mandelko.
Additionally, the town’s residents, senior Kylee Boyle, sophomore Amy Capulin, sophomore Mickayla Reed, freshman Emileigh Heisser, freshman Mia Orellana, and freshman Alayah Baxter. Along with junior Dustin Cross, freshman Hannah Stephens, and freshman Rachel Meijia will join as the island’s residents.
Purchase tickets at the door! $7 for Adults, $5 for students (Middle School through College students), and $1 for young kids (Elementary students). The cast’s dedication to this play will make it worth every penny.
