The band Ghost recently released their brand new cover, “It’s A Sin”, and so far, is already making a name for being a new fan favorite.
“It’s A Sin” was originally created by a band called Pet Shop Boys in 1987. Originally “It’s A Sin” was meant to be a song about the frustrations and rules of a Christian school that one of the lead singers went to growing up. This song showed how the lead singer was unsure of the ways that the school taught them and how he still doesn’t understand what he did wrong. After the song was released and reached multiple music billboards and number one song in many countries the song was covered many times by different artists like Elton John and Years and Years.
In 2018 Ghost covered “Its A Sin” on their album “Prequelle.” The cover was only on the deluxe CD version of the album and a limited time vinyl which was extremely hard for people to get their hands on. Ever since this album Ghost never released nor played this cover at any concert or streaming apps until very recently. On January 16 the lead singer of Ghost, Tobias Forge, decided to redo the cover and release it to every streaming app.
In the first 24 hours after Ghost released “It’s A Sin” the cover hit over 278,000 streams which marked the song as one of Ghost’s biggest single debuts on the platform. I have recently listened to “It’s A Sin” and believe this is going to be one of Ghost’s top covers ever.
One thing that I love about this cover is that it perfectly matches the vibe of Ghost. Ghost is known to be a more rock band than anything else and also does deal with a lot of religious controversy in their songs. “It’s A Sin” was originally made to be a more rock or disco song that followed real life experiences but not made to be taken seriously. Looking at the band and what the song was originally supposed to be, I think it matches Ghost vibes perfectly and doesn’t stand out from their other songs too much.
Another thing I liked about the song was that Ghost added their own twist to the song but kept the same vibe as the original song. In the original song every instrument sounded soft and quiet but in the Ghost cover they made every instrument louder and stand out especially the drums and the guitars. Ghost also added emotions to the cover which I thought was fantastic. Listening to the original and the cover ,Ghost’s version sounds more like anger and frustration while the original has no clear emotion and plays with the idea of not being taken seriously.
After this cover was released I could not stop listening to it. Everytime I go in the car or play music this one is immediately my first three to play. Because of this cover I can not wait to see what else Ghost releases and if this cover will reach billboards in the music industry.
