As a junior in high school, I want to go to cosmetology school after I graduate; it has been my dream career since 4th grade. I love braiding my friends and teammates’ hair, as well as curling and straightening. My question is, why doesn’t high school have programs for cosmetology? I have been asking myself that question since I started high school.
Abraham Lincoln High School offers many programs such as Tradeworks, culinary, art, and other exciting classes. Most of AL’s Diploma +1 programs are offered at Iowa Western Community College; either on campus, or online.
Some in-state tuition colleges such as Iowa Lakes Community College (Emmetsburg, IA), Iowa Lakes Community College (Spencer, IA), Northeast Iowa Community College (Calmar, IA), offer cosmetology programs.
Junior Josie Solon wants to pursue a career in cosmetology, and maybe even one day own her own business.
“I think that AL should have cosmetology classes because cosmetology is quickly becoming popular and more people are interested in it,” said Solon. “It could also be beneficial for other things people may want to do, or if it’s just something they are interested in but don’t want it to be their career. Some people would also like it if they just want to save money and use the skills they learned on themselves.”
Only having two years left of high school is hard when you’re not taking classes for cosmetology. But maybe when I am done with cosmetology school I can go back and get a business degree. I want to own my own salon one day, that’s my biggest goal to accomplish.
Family and Consumer Science teacher Jana Georgius thinks having a cosmetology D+1 program would be beneficial.
“Any careers that we can expose students to is a definite plus!” said Georgius. “Having a cosmetology certificate as a D+1 option would be amazing!”
Cosmetology is more than just beauty-its a form of self-expression, confidence, and creativity. People may see it as styling or makeup, but it’s truly an art that helps others feel good about themselves. That’s why cosmetology deserves the same respect as any other profession; because changing how someone sees themselves can change their whole world.
