The Greek poem “Sappho of Lesbos” was created around 600 BC–that is how long humans of the same gender have loved each other. Now, 2,625 years later, love is being debated because the court believes they should have a say in who gets married, and who does not.
“People should stand up for their rights to love whoever they want, I would definitely be willing to protest if it meant that I could marry who I love,” said my partner Kat Kennedy.
In Iowa, the first time a couple of the same-sex was denied their right to marry was in 2005, following this, on April 3, 2009, Iowa began recognizing same-sex marriages, making them the 3rd state to end the debate against love. Nobody guessed this would be temporary.
Kim Davis, a former marriage clerk in Kentucky, refused to issue a gay couple a marriage certificate due to her religious opinions. She was jailed for 6 days, and owed $260,000 to the couple for violating their rights. Recently she has begun a petition to overturn those rights for good. Iowa’s senator Sandy Salmon, has signed said petition.
It is hard to wrap your head around the idea that a stranger’s beliefs can get in the way of your entire future.
“I think Iowa’s efforts to overturn same-sex marriages is wrong. Two people loving each other isn’t harming anybody and never will,” said Kennedy.
In Early May of 2025, our State Senator signed Kim Davis’s petition in efforts to resolve the cases, Varnum v. Brien, and Obergefell v. Hodges. As of August 2025, she asks the Supreme Court to revisit these rulings. The Supreme Court is taking this into consideration on November 7th.
If the Supreme Court decides to overturn these rulings, court dates would likely begin June 2026, same-sex Marriages would be left up to the State, instead of a constitutional right. Iowa would likely refuse to allow same-sex marriages. However, if you were married before Obergefell V Hodges is overturned then your marriage will still be recognized.
There is no moral way to tell somebody that they cannot get married to their best friend because of their biology. Unfortunately it may be news that countless same-sex couples might receive.
